Minor Characters
While the minor characters aren’t nearly as fleshed out as the main characters in terms of sketches and outfits, they’re still important to the progression of the story as well as showing the unique differences in the various cultures portrayed in Dragonfly.
Gerfal
King Lagan ac Burinholt
‘A well-built man with brown hair silvering at the temples, Lagan always appeared in simple but impressive robes when meeting foreign dignitaries. He did not want them to forget that Gerfal, with its riches of mines and forests, was amongst the most prosperous of the known nations. Today’s robes of green velvet were edged with gold. Underneath he wore a loose fitting black tunic and completed the ensemble with a circlet of gold in the shape of intertwining branches.’
Lagan is almost as stubborn as Ramil but he loves him fiercely and wants him to be a great king. He knows how to make tough decisions, even at the cost of his sons’ happiness.
Influences: Stoic the Vast (How to Train Your Dragon), Spitelout (How to Train Your Dragon), King Frederic (Tangled)
Queen Zarai of Gerfal
‘His mother had originally come from the hot deserts of the far south, princess of a dark-skinned people known as the Horse Followers.’
Queen Zarai is the source Ramil’s free spirit and his love of horses. She was a wild princess of the south and while her marriage to King Lagan wasn’t a good political move, it was the loving relationship that spurred Ramil to chase his own happiness.
Influences: Queen Valerin (Nimona), Spider Woman (Across the Spiderverse), Ororo Munroe (X-Men)
Princess Briony ac Burinholt
‘She had died giving birth to his little sister, Briony, a honey-skinned creature with round scared eyes, an exchange for the vibrant Queen Zarai of Gerfal.’
Where her brother and mother are wild at heart, Princess Briony is considered to be a pale imitation. She is in the constant company of her nursemaid and doesn’t even have the natural love of horses like Ramil, though he is convinced that he can change that with time.
Influences: Zendaya Coleman (Young), Toddler Rapunzel (Tangled) Toddler Tiana (Princess and the Frog)
